Why This Company Uses Handshake 2.0

Posted by Anne Giles Clelland at 12:00 PM on March 30, 2011:

Handshake(TM) Apps from Handshake Media

I founded Handshake 2.0 in July, 2008 to be of service to other companies.  I've become my own client.  My company - Handshake Media, Incorporated - uses Handshake 2.0 because it's a two-way match.

Traits of our company that make it a match for Handshake 2.0:

  • We seek local, national and global customers and clients for our products and services.
  • Our products and services can be accessed, sold and used nationally and internationally.
  • We want to continue to establish ourselves as experts in our industry.
  • Handshake 2.0 is a business news site and we're making news!

Traits of Handshake 2.0 that make it a match for our company:

  • Handshake 2.0, since it is on the Internet, is global.  According to Google Analytics, in the past year Handshake 2.0 had 35,000 visits from 153 countries and territories.  In the past month, the top sources of traffic were the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, Mexico and China.
  • The top source of traffic to Handshake 2.0 is Google.  If Google knows you, then the globe knows you.
  • The mission of the site is based on a fundamental business principle: "It's who you know." All of us do business, and do better business, with people we know, primarily in person and, secondarily, online.  How to get to know people online - enough to do business with them - is problematic.  Hence, Handshake 2.0:  "It's still who you know."
  • Online presence is an endurance sport - it takes consistent training - posting - over a long period of time for results to show. Handshake 2.0 is updated constantly - and has been since July, 2008 - with original, highly-valued content (explaining why Google is the top source of traffic) by a community of clients, freelance writers, guests, and its founder. When my company doesn't have news, Handshake 2.0 does.  My content is showcased in a dynamic site, not in the well-meaning, barely-visited, abandoned CEO blog I thought I would maintain on my own.
  • My company's news doesn't just "sit" on Handshake 2.0.  It gets shared on Facebook and Twitter, too.
  • I'm busy. 100 words, a pic, a link, $49, done. Well, since I run Handshake 2.0, the $49 transaction is a virtual one, but I love a pretty pic with our company's news!
  • And look at the good company my company gets to keep.

When I use search terms I think my company's customers might be using - say, for example, with and without quotes, "slide puzzle mobile app" and"women and mobile apps" - and I see my company's products, services or initiatives in first page Google results listing links to Handshake 2.0 or its social media channels?  I know my company and Handshake 2.0 are definitely a match.

Coldwell Banker Townside Mobile App Featured in Roanoke Times

Coldwell Banker Townside's Mobile App Featured in the Roanoke Times "Want to contact your real estate agent on the double? Try using the new Coldwell Banker app for the iPhone/iPad or for the Android platform phone and you can."

"From a buying perspective, a buyer or an agent can be out looking at homes and see a home they like, and using the app, they can retireve the listing information, read an agent's profile, retrieve the agent's contact information and send them an email while they are sitting in front of the home."

These are excerpts from a fantastic article, Get Smart with New Apps (.pdf) by Sarah Cox for the Roanoke Times.  The story features interviews with Margaret Galecki and Jeremy Hart of Coldwell Banker Townside.

Coldwell Banker Townside Mobile App Available for iPhone and Android

Coldwell Banker Townside, REALTORS (R) launched a mobile application for the Android in September 2010.  The Coldwell Banker Townside app is now available for the iPhone on the iTunes App Store. The mobile app is also compatible with the iPod touch and the iPad.Coldwell Banker Townside REALTORS(R) App

The Coldwell Banker Townside app features the Coldwell Banker Townside real estate agents - their photos, bios, and contact information ranging from phone numbers to LinkedIn profiles to Twitter accounts - and their real estate listings. Many constituencies use the Coldwell Banker Townside app, foremost among them individuals seeking real estate agents to help them find a property, and agents seeking contact with other agents on behalf of their clients.

Available on the App Store

Coldwell Banker Townside, REALTORS (R) has offices in the New River Valley and the Roanoke Valley of Virginia.  With five universities in the locale served by Coldwell Banker Townside, instructors, researchers and students from all over the world seeking real estate in the area can use the app to match people with places - agents with their listings - rather than simply use the listings search of current real estate app offerings.

Coldwell Banker Townside wanted to expand the value of the app to the user from its first release.  Anticipating that the user might want access to all the listings in the area and access to all of Coldwell Banker’s listings in addition to area-specific search, they added an About tab and page that provides exactly those features.  The user’s experience with the Coldwell Banker Townside app is true to Coldwell Banker's tagline:  "Anytime, anywhere."

Frequently Asked Questions About the Handshake(TM) App

Posted by Anne Giles Clelland at 8:45 AM on November 5, 2010:

I'm getting great questions about the Handshake (TM) App, our mobile directory app, and we're glad to continue to share our Handshake(TM) app story by answering questions here.  Handshake Media, the parent company of Handshake 2.0, has released three versions of the Handshake(TM) App and has a fourth under development.

Your description of the Handshake(TM) App is so long!  Why all the detail?

Icon for Handshake 2.0's Handshake(TM) App I've debated about writing a "pitch page" for the Handshake App and linking to details on additional pages.  The challenge is that mobile app development is painstakingly precise.  "Good enough" won't do because "good enough" won't work!  It's similar to bookkeeping.  It's only one zero off - that's good enough, isn't it?  A zero's difference between $100 and $1000 is a big difference.  So I chose to write a thorough description of the app and how we work together with clients to create it so we would all know what's involved to make the app work for everybody.

What's the bottom line?  How much does it cost?

Our basic app is $199 to set up with a $19.95 per month subscription fee.  Here's all about our Handshake(TM) App pricing.  I did make a separate page for that.

I want a mobile app for my company (or organization) but I'm not sure the Handshake(TM) App is the right one.

It might not be.  The right mobile app for a company or organization will depend upon its goals and mission.  The Handshake(TM) App is for companies and organizations who want their people to be known by other people.  At its simplest level, that's what it's for.

Can you custom create a mobile app for our company?

Yes.  According to silicon.com, "A Forrester report last year [2009] set the price of a no-frills app at a minimum of $20,000 - and reckoned a more sophisticated app could set you back up to $150,000."

The Handshake(TM) App is as close-to-custom as we can offer in a corporate mobile app at a price that might work better for you than a custom developed app.  We use your name, your data, your images, and it features your people.  Your organization's branded version of the Handshake(TM) is all about you.

What are the hidden costs of a Handshake(TM) App?

That Handshake bills you for?  None. If you want additional features, those are extra.  Here's our Handshake(TM) App pricing. Hidden costs that you incur?  Minimal, but worth considering.  The back end of your Handshake(TM) App is a database that we create, for which you supply the initial data, to which we give you access, which runs on a Rackspace Cloud server.  Updates to the app's database appear immediately in the app.  But someone from your company or organization has to go to the database, log in, and make the update.  That's a labor cost on your end.  Creating great data, rather than using good data, takes time as well.  Please see the next FAQ.

How do I get the most out of having a Handshake(TM) App?

The better the data, the better the app.  I shared my thoughts on the evolution of contact information data.  The more data you have on how to contact your people - through social media channels, geolocation, Skype and more - the greater the reach of your "handshake" to others through your own version of the Handshake App.

Mobile App Development - A Reflection on Contact Information Data

Posted by Anne Giles Clelland at 9:00 AM on November 2, 2010:

Handshake Media, the parent company of Handshake 2.0, has released three versions and has a fourth under development of the Handshake (TM) App, a mobile directory app.

"It's still you who you know" powers business deals and that's our mission for the Handshake(TM) App as well - to extend the reach of people and their companies and organizations to mobile customers and clients globally.

As co-developer of the app, I worked closely with the contact information data that creates the profiles of individuals featured in each version that make the Handshake(TM) App's handshakes possible.

From the experience of creating Handshake(TM) Apps for (1) a site's community - Handshake 2.0 - (2) a company whose members are contacted directly by the public to do business - Coldwell Banker, Townside REALTORS(R) - and (3) a membership organization - the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, Virginia - I had a huge insight about how we now get to know each other.

If we want to be known globally, we need to be "knowable" as diversely as possible.

The world's population speaks many languages.  The individuals in that population have preferences for the ways they communicate.  For many, a phone number is no longer one of those ways.

Here's the profile of the most "knowable" person profiled in a Handshake(TM) App to date - Jeremy Hart of Coldwell Banker Townside REALTORS(R).

Profile of Jeremy Hart in the Coldwell Banker Townside mobile app for the Android

Via mobile app through the Coldwell Banker Townside App, and by phone, email, multiple websites, LinkedIn and Twitter, potential and current clients can contact Jeremy in the way that works best for them.  Jeremy is diversely and globally accessible.

What have I learned from all this?

As a company leader, I need to increase the diversity of the ways the globe's people can contact me and my organization's members.  I may have a Facebook page or a Twitter account for my company, but people who make contact through online channels don't want to know my company.  They want to know me and my people.

Handshake App FAQs

Posted by Anne Giles Clelland at 6:30 AM on September 24, 2010:

We've gotten great feedback on our Handshake (TM) App since we launched it for both the Android and iPhone and thank all who have given time and thought to sharing their ideas with us.  We've received many questions, too!  Here are answers we hope will be of help.

Q.  Who is in the Handshake App?

A.  Clients of Handshake Media - the parent company of Handshake 2.0 - who have been showcased on the site are in the Handshake App, and anyone who has appeared on Handshake 2.0 two or more times. (If we missed you, please let us know!)

Q.  Why are some profiles different from others?

A.  Clients receive a full profile: company name, company URL, person's name, link to the person's public LinkedIn profile, telephone number, link to the company's or the person's Twitter stream, company description, and geolocation.

Individuals who have appeared on Handshake 2.0 but are not clients receive a standard profile:  company name, company URL, person's name, link to the person's public LinkedIn profile, and geolocation.

Q. Can the information in a profile be updated?

A.  Yes.  Please send updated information with links to contact@handshake20.com

Q. Can I update my information myself?

A.  For the current version of the Handshake App for Handshake 2.0, we make the changes for you.

That's because we're our own client.  Handshake 2.0's parent company - digital media technology company Handshake Media - created a branded version of the Handshake App for Handshake 2.0.  Companies or organizations for whom we create their own branded versions of the Handshake App have access to their own data, can make changes 24-7, and see the changes appear immediately in their own mobile apps.

We have a client's corporate branded Handshake App just about ready to launch for the Android, so we'll have another example to show you soon.

Q. Can the information displayed be changed?

A.  We can expand a person's or company's presence in the Handshake App to a full profile if they become a client.  We have plans to expand clients' full profiles and standard profiles in the future.  For example, we may add corporate Facebook page links to full profiles and Twitter links to standard profiles.

Clients who want their own branded versions of the Handshake App can choose the profile information they want listed and the order in which they want it to appear.  For now, we'll keep our current information display the same, but we're open to suggestions for the 2.0 version of the Handshake App for Handshake 2.0.

Q.  Why doesn't the profile include a photo, a job title, etc.?

A.  We love LinkedIn because it provides access to that information and more.  That's why we included one-click, one-touch access to LinkedIn in the Handshake App.

Q.  Why do some companies appear in the app more than once?

A.  Because Handshake 2.0's founder - that would be moi - in her excitement to create a Minimum Viable Product and launch the Handshake App ASAP, didn't think through the structure of the database, i.e. design it to account for multiple people from the same company or organization having appeared on Handshake 2.0.  I take full responsibility for launching an app with a quirk.

Q.  Why isn't there a Handshake App for the BlackBerry?

A. We're pondering it.  Given the current market share for Android and iPhone, and our personal experience with BlackBerry users' limited use of BlackBerry apps, we're pondering.

Q.  Why am I not in the Handshake App?

A.  Because you either 1) haven't been on Handshake 2.0 yet, or 2) haven't been on Handshake 2.0 twice.

Q.  How do I get in the Handshake App?

A.  Ah, we loved this question.

To get in the Handshake App for Handshake 2.0, you have to get on Handshake 2.0.  Frankly, we think the fastest, easiest way to get on Handshake 2.0 that offers the most value is to buy a Warm Handshake.  And we have a page with other ways:  How do I get on Handshake 2.0?

We welcome more questions and feedback!  Please send us an email at contact@handshake20.com or tweet to us on Twitter @handshake20.
