The 2009 sprint triathlon season has started in the southeastern United States and my husband and I, over the past two weekends, spent our regionally-earned dollars in other regions. Traveling to sprint triathlon venues, we paid for hotels, meals, and gas in support of other regions’ economies.
While I lean towards the view of Socrates - "I am neither an Athenian nor a Greek, but a citizen of the world" - and am cautious of regionalism becoming localism or provincialism, I have theorized on the how and why of regions benefiting from the use of social media.
After attending a sprint triathlon in Lynchburg, Virginia in 2007, I couldn’t help but dream of the how and why of the regional benefits of holding a sprint triathlon in the New River Valley.
Take a look at the addresses of the almost 700 participants at the Kinetic Sprint Triathlon held near Fredericksburg, Virginia on May 10, 2009.
Many of those participants - as we did - drove in and spent their regionally-earned dollars in another region.
The dream is postponed until 2010 due to construction delays at our New River Valley venue, the Olympic-caliber Christiansburg Aquatic Center, but the only sprint triathlon in Southwest Virginia, and the only pool swim west of Lynchburg – the New River Valley Triathlon - is on the Virginia Triathlon Series schedule.
And the hotel we stayed in for the Kinetic Sprint Triathlon?
Sold out.
