An Entrepreneur's Entrepreneur

Posted by Anne Giles Clelland at 6:30 AM on March 11, 2010:

Ken Maready, Hutchison Law Group, Blacksburg, VirginiaAn attorney for technology entrepreneurs who’s entrepreneurial enough to launch his own law firm?  Unheard of.  For that attorney to offer outstanding, expert legal services at a fair price so technology start-ups can start up?  Unheard of.  An entrepreneurial attorney joining his law firm with another entrepreneurial law firm so he can expand the services he offers his clients?  No way.  For that attorney to ANSWER THE PHONE when a company founder calls with a question of mission-critical urgency? Never going to happen.

But it did happen. Ken Maready opened up shop in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Ken Maready:  An entrepreneur’s entrepreneur.

Fwix Chooses Roanoke

Posted by Anne Giles Clelland at 8:40 AM on April 9, 2009:

From the NewVa Corridor Technology Council, NCTC:

The Roanoke and New River Valleys have been featured as one of 12 regions in the U.S. on a new website.  Fwix shows users the best of everything in a region by aggregating online content from millions of articles and thousands of sources providing the user with an easy way to access photos, videos, events, articles, reviews and music.

The other cities featured on Fwix are San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Austin, Seattle, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington D.C.

“The Roanoke and the New River Valleys have been intentional in using cutting-edge technologies to position their business, educational, and government sectors,” said Fwix founder Darian Shirazi, who was one of the first employees at Facebook. “Establishing Fwix in this region gives us an opportunity to test our site in an emerging technology community.”

Fwix was founded in August of 2008 by Darian Shirazi in his garage. The original version of the site was launched in September of 2008 and gained traction as a new media service designed to help people keep in touch with their local area.

Since August, Fwix's team has grown from one person to six people and has completely re-engineered its product to provide the best possible local information. Shirazi said the Roanoke community has been very supportive since the beginning and added “It’s one thing to build a product you love, but it’s important to have a connection with the people who use your product, to listen to your customers, and engage in two-way dialogue."

Cory Donovan, Executive Director of the NewVa Corridor Technology Council, believes that a presence on sites like Fwix.com uniquely exposes our region. “If you’re traveling on Interstate 81, you don’t see the budding technology community here, it’s ‘beyond the trees,’ but now we’re a destination along the information superhighway.”

Fwix.com will release an upgrade to its service with new features on Thursday, April 9, 2009.

From Z. Kelly Queijo:

A year ago, I got the dreaded call, “Kelly, we love working with you, but we're restructuring and eliminating your position. If you'd like to move...” but, I didn't want to move from Blacksburg, Virginia. Suddenly, I found myself without a company to represent, without a client-base, without a list of calls to make, and no more trade shows to work. I was thrust into a life without structure, focus or contacts.

Z. Kelly Queijo My first reaction was to take a breath and give myself some time off for a change. That was good for a while, but it didn't seem I was cut out for a life of leisure. Then, the fear of becoming invisible - an unknown - even to those in my own community started to creep in.

I called Cory Donovan, executive director of the NewVa Corridor Technology Council (NCTC), to ask if he needed help with any projects. Cory put me to work doing something I knew how to do, which is write. As a volunteer, I wrote and edited copy for some of the organization's email and web communication and I helped out with event registrations. The work gave me back something I had lost.

Cory's help did not end there. Knowing about my passion for writing, he introduced me to an editor and from there, my freelance writing career was launched. Six months, four editors, and 30 articles later, I am a working freelance writer - a recession entrepreneur, if you will. Structure, focus, and contacts are once again my foundation and I'm building a business based on old and new relationships, a network of entrepreneurs to learn from and write about, and new technologies that keep me all a twitter.

I look forward to the annual TechNite Awards Banquet 10.0 which will be held on May 21, 2009. Here, NCTC recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding member companies and I plan to be there celebrating with other NCTC supporters. If you haven't nominated a company or individual, there's still time to do so. The deadline is March 31, 2009 and the categories include: Rising Star, Entrepreneur, NewVa Leadership, Innovation, and Educator.

At TechNite, we're all visible!

Bob Metcalfe - Good Company

Posted by Anne Giles Clelland at 8:00 AM on November 22, 2008:

Gotta love a guy who begins a talk, “I have not found a way not to be annoying.”

I found Bob Metcalfe not annoying, but inspiring.  And thought-provoking in an uneasy, thought-challenging way.

Bob Metcalfe, founder of 3Com, inventor of Ethernet, partner with Polaris Ventures, speaks at Virginia Tech When Metcalfe questioned the use of terms like “green” and “sustainability” and the premises underlying them, he said, “We’re not going to conserve our way to a solution about energy.”

My bike-riding, no-paper-napkin friends would love that.

What I cherished most was Metcalfe’s prediction of the origin of the solution to finding cheap and clean energy:  research professors at research universities, their graduate students, and “scaling entrepreneurs.”

The synergy of research and "scaling entrepreneurs" is happening right here, right now, at business acceleration center VT KnowledgeWorks.  Metcalfe even referred to two VT KnowledgeWorks companies, TORC Technologies and VPT Energy Systems.

For finding solutions, we’re in good company here.

And Bob Metcalfe was very good company.

Handshake 2.0 thanks Bob Metcalfe for visiting and thanks Virginia Tech, the MIT Club of the Blue Ridge, and the NewVa Corridor Technology Council for inviting him.

Bob Metcalfe is the founder of 3Com, inventor of Ethernet, and a partner with Polaris Ventures.  He gave a talk entitled “Enernet: Lessons from 62 years of Internet history for how to meet world needs for cheap and clean energy,” at the Skelton Conference Center, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, on November 21, 2008.

Added 12/02/08:  Thanks, Bob Summers, for this link to a video and slides from the event.
