Exciting news....The Fresh Palate  has a guest chef this week, Jang, who will create authentic Thai dishes especially for The Fresh Palate's customers.

For The Fresh Palate's menu, Chef Jang has selected Green Curry with Vegetables & Chicken (or Tofu), Spicy Beef Salad (Yum Nuae) and Pad Thai.

Haven't tried Thai food before? These dishes are the perfect entry into this cuisine.

Not into Thai food?  May we suggest our freshly prepared Red Beans & Rice with Cornbread or Cheese Grits smothered with Shrimp & Cherry Tomatoes?  Perhaps you would prefer Spinach Walnut Gorgonzola Salad & Black Bean Grilled Cheese, or a Grilled Turkey & Cheddar Sandwich?

We invite you to place your order by midnight on Thursday,  May 28, for home delivery during the afternoon on Sunday, May 31.  We look forward to you savoring a fresh taste of Thai from The Fresh Palate.

An Evening with The Fresh Palate

From Anne Clelland:

“Life has become a song to me.”
John Cougar Mellencamp, NPR Interview, 3/31/09

Our walls are orange and, at night, they glow with the reflection of our guests' faces as if the whole world truly is made of light.

Last week was my turn to host my women’s book club.  I eat spaghetti with Ragu most days for lunch, and for dinner, too, if Mr. Handshake 2.0 is working late.  I am not tired of spaghetti, but my book club is, so when I read of the savory fare described by Z. Kelly Queijo in her post on The Fresh Palate, I felt as if I were discovering a gift to give.

A tasting of fresh fare from The Fresh Palate

Beth Barnett-Boebel, founder of The Fresh Palate, was so kind to offer a tasting from The Fresh Palate’s menu from one woman entrepreneur to another.  She conferred with Chef Giovanni Guarini, made suggestions, and I said yes and yes to black bean crêpes and vegetable-filled ravioli and tiramisu.

In the days of the hope chest, my grandmother – now 99 years old – went with me to select my china and silver patterns and I have collected pieces for over three decades now.  I love setting a beautiful table, but had to laugh as I placed sterling silver on paper napkins, marveling at what I used to think was very, very important.

And then, as in the world of Web 2.0 where all intimacy begins with text – our connection began on Twitter, @thefreshpalate and @handshake20, then moved to e-mail, then to phone – Beth arrived at my house and we had never met.  She got to the back stairs before I could come out to greet her, so my first impression of her was of her lovely, bright face looking up into mine.

I felt so in-the-know as we unpacked The Fresh Palate’s special delivery containers, each full of perfectly wrapped ingredients.  I treasured being allowed to be part of an expert process, of which I knew nothing, even for a few moments.

Beth Barnett-Boebel, founder of The Fresh Palatel And then the women arrived and we laughed and talked and sipped wine and asked Beth how she made this and how she made that and we ate black bean crêpes and then a cheese torte and then we sat in a circle to talk about the book while Beth began rolling out homemade pasta for the ravioli.

I read the first 600 pages of Wally Lamb's The Hour I First Believed pushing back, then keening.  It is about Columbine so it is about here.  In the six weeks before I finished the last 100 pages, I just had to be with, one more time, what was and what is.

Within the light of the orange walls, we sat close, and spoke our stories, and cried in chorus.

And with us, Beth, expecting a child, rolled homemade pasta, a gift of herself and of her brand-new business, for the women gathered with their broken, hopeful hearts.

Fresh Ideas and Food from The Fresh Palate

From Z. Kelly Queijo:

Where in Montgomery County, Virginia,  can you go for a gourmet meal prepared with fresh, wholesome, organic vegetables and locally-raised, grass-fed, beef, poultry, or pork?

Home, of course. Delivered right to your doorstep,The Fresh Palate is a home meal delivery service that caters to the working family.

This fresh idea for a business is the brainchild of Beth Boebel, a registered dietitian. She, along with Italian Chef Giovanni Guarini, create fabulous meals made from the finest ingredients. She uses grass-fed, locally-raised beef, poultry, and pork, or organic-fed when the local option is not available. The majority of the vegetables are organically grown and are also purchased locally as much as seasonably possible.

New menus are posted on The Fresh Palate web site weekly. Customers place their orders and pay online by Wednesday of each week and meals are delivered on Sundays. Orders typically range from dinner-in once per week, to as many as three or four meals per week, per customer.

Velvet Minnick, working mom of two and revenue operations manager at Mailtrust, has found the Fresh Palate an easy way to get healthy and affordable meals on the table without compromising family time. The variety offered and the reasonable cost encourages the family to routinely try something new and different.

“As a vegetarian, I am a big fan of her meat alternative dishes, such as Tequila Glazed Seitan with Chipotle White Bean and Kale Bake. This dish was also prepared for my husband, but with grilled chicken.  So it's pretty neat that we can have the same dish, but with different meat options.  And the kids love the healthy versions of the chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. The convenience factor is just unbelievable, and definitely something I am willing to pay for.”

The thought and care Boebel has put into planning The Fresh Palate's healthy meals extends to other aspects of the business as well. Protecting customers' health and the environment are equally high priorities. The microwave-ready food packaging she has chosen will not leach chemicals into food when heated, and the containers are either recyclable or biodegradable. The insulated delivery bags and ice packs are reusable. Customers place their empty bags on their doorsteps for pick-up when the new orders are delivered each week.

Boebel plans to expand to daily deliveries as the community's taste for home-delivered meals grows.

You can follow The Fresh Palate on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook. Either way, it's sure to be a delicious experience.
