“Handshake” was directed by Jarred Foresman and produced by Handshake Media, Incorporated.

The Handshake Video premiered in a blog post on December 1, 2009.  The Handshake Video premiered in public on the big screen at Bull & Bones Brewhaus and Grill at a Tweetup on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, from 6:00 PM to 6:03 PM, EST.

The original music, Handshake, was written by Joseph Masciello and is available on iTunes.

For most businesses, a web site and business cards are all that’s required to represent a company, but for Anne, whose company is founded on harnessing the power of social communications by using today’s technologies to connect regional businesses to the broader, global marketplace, web sites and business cards are not enough. It’s a multi-channel world and having a multi-dimensional presence opens doors to more business opportunities. Handshake 2.0 facilitates making that happen.

What did I do at the Handshake premiere? I shook hands with people I met there for the first time. I shook hands with friends and business associates, and I introduced those I knew to people they did not know. It was a good night for handshakes 1.0 and 2.0.

The cast included Rob Martinez, Sean Moore, Kevin Allen and those from all over the world who shake hands when their paths happen to cross in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Ideas about Health Start-ups

I am part of a new start-up whose product is a behavioral health software platform.  Unlike other entrepreneurial software ventures where a Minimum Viable Product might do, having a great idea for health care software isn’t enough to take it to market.

To prove health care products work and do no harm – from medications, to medical devices, to mobile apps – requires clinical trials.  (I use “clinical trials” as an umbrella research term to include clinical studies, field studies, pilot studies, etc.) Clinical trials require people.  Since start-ups usually don’t have, or have access to, lots of people, that means a health care start-up needs to partner with an organization with lots of people. In addition to lots of people, organizations have lots of policies.

I am in the process of following lots of policies. 

Demonstration photos are better with cats in them.People are human and, therefore, subject to protection as human research subjects.  My first compliance task was to apply as an independent researcher to take an online course from The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).  According to CITI’s site, “As of May 2010, the CITI Program is used by over 1130 participating institutions and facilities from around the world.  Over 1,300,000 people have registered and completed a CITI course since September 2000.”

After a month of emails, phone calls and snail mail to receive access to the software, then after what I estimate to be about 80 hours to take and pass the human research course, I am now one of those over 1 million CITI course grads. 

I have thought often of the two most important lessons Bob Pack says he has learned about business:  “It will cost more than you thought. It will take longer than you thought.”

I can’t find the source, but I read something like this within the last six months:  “Asking an entrepreneur for time is like asking him for blood.”

The CITI course was excellent in the way the best courses are – I gained knowledge and my world view was broadened.  The course should be a prerequisite for conducting human subjects research.  But it took a lot of time…

The next requirement for conducting a clinical trial is to submit an application to an organization’s Institutitional Review Board (IRB).  When I see a Word doc application, I assume that my long-cultivated, happy, skilled process will kick in and I will just start writing.  However, I had no idea of the depth of thinking, concentration and research, and the synthesis of information, knowledge, ideas and concepts that would be required to complete an IRB application.

Two months later, I am almost finished with my part of writing the IRB application.  Like the CITI course, the IRB application process is excellent.  Our study’s research design and its attentiveness to the people involved is profoundly better as a result of having addressed the IRB application’s requirements.  But the Bob Pack Theorem applies:  It has cost more in personal resources and time than I ever could have imagined.

Handshake 2.0 is headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia, home of Virginia Tech, and I felt immediate empathy and respect for those conducting this research at Virginia Tech when I read, “This study is approved by the VA Tech IRB.”  Wow, I have an idea of what that took. Awesome.

Feel. Think. Choose. Makes Finals in VT KnowledgeWorks Entrepreneurship Challenge

We were delighted to learn that Handshake Media, Incorporated's white label software platform Feel. Think. Choose.(TM) was one of five finalists selected for the 2012 VT KnowledgeWorks Open Business Concept Competition.

Feel. Think. Choose.(TM)I will be presenting and pitching Feel. Think. Choose. at 2:45 PM on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the VT KnowledgeWorks Entrepreneurship Challenge at The Inn at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. 

I'll have up to 15 minutes to make the presentation, then judges will have 10-12 minutes to ask questions.  The presentation requires one of the fundamental tools for seeking outside investment, the slide deck, a distillation of the proposed value of the business model and business opportunity for a product or service.

Work: It's Personal by Anne Giles ClellandWhen Dan Smith suggested publishing a collection of the workplace advice columns I have been honored to write for him and Tom Field for Valley Business FRONT since December of 2008, as I reviewed the series of more than 30 questions and answers, I was struck by how topics might be work-related, but how profoundly the questioner sought personal clarity and meaning.  "Don't take it personally," we are told.  But we do. We are told, "Separate personal from professional."  But we don't.  Along with our "skill sets," "core competencies" and "thought leadership," we take our hearts and minds to work with us every day.

Hence the title:  Work: It's Personal.

Creating Work: It's Personal was a delightful team effort.  Dan Smith, editor of Valley Business FRONT wrote a humblingly beautiful foreword, Kelsey Sarles designed the book's cover and interior with her distinctive artistry and its accompanying cartoons with her inimitable creative view of the world.  I had my first studio photo shoot ever with Wayne Dunford and thank him for helping me be myself for the camera.  We used CreateSpace to publish the book in print and Kindle Direct Publishing for the Kindle version.

Dan Smith kindly circulated the manuscript prior to publication and I am awed and grateful for the reviews readers offered.

She Chooses(R) - Feel. Think. Choose.(TM)The latest Handshake(R) brand mobile application from Handshake Mobile, a division of Handshake Media, Incorporated, was released today.  She Chooses(R), the personal awareness and social sharing software platform for women – first released as a web app on March 22, 2011 – is now available as a mobile app in the iTunes App Store.

She ChoosesR) mobile was developed by Alex Edelman using Titanium Appcelerator and designed by Kelsey Sarles.

Handshake 2.0 Turns 3.0

Handshake 2.0 launched on July 28, 2008 as a business news blog. According to the New York Times, even then, 95% of all blogs were abandoned. On its three-year anniversary, with the help of dozens of writers, artists and filmmakers, Handshake 2.0 has almost 1500 posts, an average of 500 posts per year.  It has evolved into a business news, social media, and public relations services site with almost three dozen clients.  According to Google Analytics, from January 2011 to July 2011, “Visits” to the site were up 4.55% over the same period in 2010, and “New Visits” were up a whopping 17.77%.  Visits to the site were just under 35,000 in 2010 with Google searches as the top source of traffic.  When someone tells me, “I can’t Google anything without finding Handshake 2.0!”, that is music to my ears.

And in the three-year history of Handshake 2.0, the premiere of the “Handshake” music video on the big screen at Bull & Bones, where I was surrounded by clients, supporters, friends and family, is still, for me, the very best moment.
