As I mentioned in Google+: Do We Add It?, I have been contemplating adding Google+ as a new social media channel to Handshake 2.0's existing online network.

Thanks to Patsy Stewart of The Social BUZZ Lab, I have learned that thinking of Google+ as just another social network is strategically incorrect.

In her post on the relationship between Google+ and Google search, Patsy Stewart cites Google's January 10, 2012 announcement of Search, plus Your World, and quotes Google:  "We’re transforming Google into a search engine that understands not only content, but also people and relationships."

Since Handshake 2.0's founding, quality content has been our top priority and Google's February, 2011 announcement that search results would favor original content was wonderful validation of our business model.  In fact, from February 24, 2011 – January 16, 2012, compared to the same time period the previous year, according to Google Analytics, Visits are up 17% and visits by Unique Visitors are up 30%.  The top source of traffic to Handshake 2.0 is Google.  What Google search users seek, they find increasingly on Handshake 2.0.

Patsy Stewart posted 10 Simple Steps to Get Started with Google+ yesterday, January 16, 2012.  I used the Google search term "get started on Google+" to see if I could find her post.  I used the standard Google search page and wasn't able to see it on the first few pages yet.  I joined Google+ on January 10, 2012 and, wanting to be as certain as possible that I optimize my personal and corporate presences on Google+ to benefit our clients, I have yet to create a brand page and have only "encircled" Patsy Stewart.  I logged into Google+, clicked Search, was taken to the standard Google search page, and used the same search term.  There was Patsy's post on page one.

In her post 3 Ways to Benefit From Google Search Plus Your World., Patsy kindly links to our Google+ post:  "If you’re not on Google+ you’re probably asking yourself if you need to be there.  Handshake Media recently addressed this question."

Handshake Media is no longer asking if we need to be on Google+.  The details of the implications will reveal themselves.  Time to study Patsy's 10 Simple Steps to Get Started with Google+ and 3 Ways to Benefit From Google Search Plus Your World and walk the talk of "It's still who you know."  Content, people, relationships.  Yes, those are our top priorities.
