From Tyson Daniel, Director of Coach "Bud" Foster's Lunch Pail Defense Foundation:
The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation, keeper of Coach “Bud” Foster’s Lunch Pail Scholarship, enjoyed its first Tailgate at a Virginia Tech home game in Blacksburg, Virginia since being re-organized as a non-profit corporation and funding its first round of scholarships last spring.
The team played well, the weather was nice and we had a good crowd at our first Tailgate. What could’ve been better? Understandably, Tech fans are wild about Virginia Tech Football! They’re loyal to the core and, obviously, they love their team – which includes the coaches.
That generosity was made evident by Virginia Tech alumnus Craig Nesbitt who donated his season Parking Passes in Lot #1 for the Tailgate and by the numerous fans that signed up to join the Pail Head Club.
“It was great!” said CJ Yunger – one of the members of the newly formed LPD Student Ambassador Organization. “We had about seventy-five people register to become Pail Heads.”
The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation was formed at Coach Foster’s request to fund a need-based academic scholarship for an eligible student from the New River Valley of Virginia who personifies the fortitude and work ethic symbolized by the old steel lunch pail. The organization took shape in late 2009 and is now a self-sustaining entity with a scholarship mission.
From Coach’ Foster's perspective, the ideal candidate is probably not the class valedictorian since that individual will have plenty of options. Instead, we are looking for the young man or young lady who has overcome serious adversity in his or her life and who has persevered to earn subsequent success and become a positive example for their peers.
This past spring, the Lunch Pail Defense Foundation planned to give away one scholarship for $5,000, but, in keeping with Foster’s penchant for over-achievement, it gave away three scholarships totaling $8,000.
Notice in our photo that Coach Foster is a Pail Head? We invite you to join the Lunch Pail Club and become a Pail Head, too! We want you for LPD!
