Handshake 2.0 asked Tyson Daniel to tell us about the The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation. Tyson Daniel kindly replied:
Coach Bud Foster, Defensive Coordinator for the Virginia Tech Hokies football team, uses "The Lunch Pail" to symbolize his philosophy of coaching and life. On the side of the pail is painted "WIN," an acronym for What's Important Now. Foster defines "What's Important Now" as "To make change; to influence; to use this moment to be better than the last; to achieve greatness in all aspects of your life; win at home. Win at school. Win at business. Win at life."
The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation was founded by Coach Bud Foster as a non-profit scholarship organization. Academic, financial need, and character-based scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students in the New River Valley of Virginia. As Bud Foster puts it, "I wanted a way to give back to the community and now we’re looking for the well-rounded individual that has faced and overcome real adversity. We’re looking for applicants with the character and fortitude embodied by ‘The Lunch Pail.’”
As a result of Coach Foster's desire to “give back," The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation not only met our 2011 goal by awarding an Inaugural $5,000 Lunch Pail Scholarship to a graduating senior from the New River Valley to Thomas Hart from Giles County High School, but also, in the spirit of the Lunch Pail, we exceeded our goal by awarding two (2) additional scholarships, $2,000 to Christina Montgomery from Radford High School and $1,000 to Katelyn Cochran from Staunton River High School. We were able to announce our inaugural scholarship recipients at the Virginia Tech Spring Game, April 23, 2011.
We will add additional scholarships reaching a larger geographical area as we raise more funds.
