Founder’s Day to FurnishWeb – Internet Databases Reaches its 10th Year

Internet Databases, a custom web applications development firm, turns ten. From Z. Kelly Queijo:

“We always remember Founder's Day and Pay Day.”

Barry Welch smiles when he says this.  And, at a time when the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that roughly six in ten businesses don't even make it to the four-year mark, Barry has every right to smile. On May 3, 2009, his company, Internet Databases, reached its 10-year anniversary.

Looking back on that day,  Barry recalls, “It was a Sunday.  I went to church, then a planning meeting for our group's trip to Haiti.  On Monday, I went to the health department to get shots for my trip and took Jilian out to lunch to celebrate: a) Getting paid for another month and b) Founder's Day. I called Jeff and told him to go out to lunch on the company out in Arizona. We always remember Founder's Day and Pay Day.” Jilian and Jeff have worked for Barry since 2001.

Internet Databases began as a custom web applications development company in 1999 while Barry's wife, Allison, was pregnant with their second child. “She got tired of hearing me talk about starting a business. She supported me 100% and felt I would regret it in the future if I didn't give a good try. My first client was the US Army as a subcontract programmer.”

Later that year, Hooker Furniture became a client, setting the stage for what would become the focus of Barry's work – developing web-based applications for furniture companies.

In 2007, he made the switch from solely developing custom applications to releasing his first software product: FurnishWEB, an online data management system for the home furnishings industry.

In 2008, he added his 20th client, Huntington Furniture.

When asked if there were surprises along the way, Barry replied, “Ha! It all was a surprise! But in general, I've been surprised by the amount of confidence and faith put into us by organizations much larger than ourselves. I've been surprised by how we've been accepted by a fairly closed industry. I've been surprised by how differently seemingly similar companies in the same industries operate. I've been surprised that people are interested in our story.”

Any company that stays in business 10 years is a story. A company led by someone with character who earns accolades from clients and supporters such as:

and who leads not only with his mind but also with his heart, deserving the title “Sheriff of FurnishWeb"?

Now, that's a story worth telling.
