  1. E-mail subject line:  Content Generation – Topic
  2. Creative, original, keyword-rich title
  3. Fact-based, single, introductory sentence.  If it’s common knowledge, you do not have to provide a source.  If it’s uncommon knowledge, provide a link to the source.
  4. A form of this question: “Handshake 2.0 asked, ‘What can businesses do about/for/with this fact?'”
  5. A quote (One good way to acquire a quote is to send your factual statement and the question you have posed with a polite, respectful request for an answer or opinion.  Include a link to Handshake 2.0 and to your LinkedIn profile in your e-mail signature.)
  6. Identification of, and a link to, the source of the quote – put in parentheses after related content
  7. Links to any sources in the quote – put in parentheses after related content

An example of how to create the content:

  1. Content Generation – New Postage Rates
  2. New Postage Rates Provide Social Media Opportunity
  3. United States postage rates for first class mail increased from $0.42 to $0.44 per stamp on Monday, May 11, 2009, the fifth increase since 2000.
  4. Handshake 2.0 asked, “What can businesses do to address this new cost?”
  5. “Especially with regard to sharing company news, now is the time to move from thinking about dipping a toe into the waters of social media to taking the plunge,” said
  6. Anne Giles Clelland, founder of Handshake 2.0 (http://www.handshake2.com), a business news and public relations site.
  7. “Instead of print publications sent through the mail, a business can use ‘old media’ e-mail – free through Gmail (http://gmail.google.com) – a free Twitter “tweet” (http://twitter.com), and a free update on a Facebook (http://www.facebook.com) page.  Print media can be invaluable with certain target markets, making postage rate changes negligible.  But to reach new markets in new ways, the postage rate change may be just the encouragement some businesses will use to take a swan dive into the waters of social media tools.”
