Postage Rate Increase May Offer Social Media Opportunity

United States postage rates for first class mail increased from $0.42 to $0.44 per stamp on Monday, May 11, 2009, the fifth increase since 2000.

Especially with regard to sharing company news, now may be a time to move from thinking about dipping a toe into the waters of social media to taking the plunge.

Instead of getting the word out through print publications sent through the mail, a business can use, for example, "old media" e-mail – free through Gmail - a free Twitter "tweet," or a free update on a Facebook page. 

Print media can be invaluable with certain target markets, making postage rate changes negligible.  But to reach new markets in new ways, the postage rate change may be just the encouragement some businesses will use to take their first swan dive into the waters of social media.
