Missy Ward – A Brain of the Web 2.0 World

From Z. Kelly Queijo:

Missy Ward, affiliate marketing expert Missy Ward is a woman of many titles: wife, mother, entrepreneur, co-founder of Affiliate Summit, FeedFront Magazine and GeekCast.fm, affiliate manager for ThesisAffiliates.com, blogger at MissyWard.com, and host of the weekly pod cast: TheSpew.fm.

In the world of affiliate marketing, she's an expert.

Affiliate marketing is a business relationship between a website owner and an online merchant's site where the site owner receives payment for promoting the merchant's products or services. Anyone with a blog likely knows about Amazon's and Google's affiliate marketing programs, but many companies, from small businesses to the Fortune 500s, including Dell, eBay, Home Depot, Walmart, and Zappos, also have such programs.

Peter Shankman, founder of Help A Reporter Out, (HARO) and founder/CEO of The Geek Factory, Inc., says definitively, “Missy is one of the brains in the Web 2.0 world. She's smart, funny, and knows this industry well enough to not take it too seriously. Best kind of marketer in the world.”

For those interested in affiliate marketing, Missy says, "Half the battle for new affiliates is that they don't know how to get started."

The good news: it's not too late to start an affiliate marketing web-based business. “E-commerce is continuing to grow and, given the economic conditions, more and more companies are turning towards performance-based marketing initiatives which is great news for affiliate marketers.  There is a ton of opportunity for folks who are concentrating on long-tail marketing efforts as well as those embracing Web 2.0 tactics including video and social media.”

The bad news is that just like with any entrepreneurial venture, Missy says, “It takes creativity, testing and 'stick-to-it-iveness' to make a go of it. Affiliate marketing is not easy.  It is not a get-rich-quick scheme.”

Missy acknowledges that she has friends who make anywhere from a few hundred a month to thousands per month from affiliate relationships.

She recommends developing quality content for your e-commerce site and encourages the affiliate entrepreneur to think about ways to go beyond the banner ad by using videos and testimonials. Choosing a reputable channel to work with such as Linkshare, Commission Junction and Shareasale is also important to building a successful affiliate marketing enterprise.

Experts, entrepreneurs, and merchants stuck on affiliate marketing will come together at the 2009 Affiliate Summit East conference  in New York City on August 9 – 11, 2009. Keynote speakers include Chris Brogan, president of New Marketing Labs, and HARO's Peter Shankman.
