Valley Business FRONT

When Dan Smith left the Blue Ridge Business Journal, his last article indicated he would pursue "other interests."  Now we know.

From Dan Smith to Handshake 2.0:

Tom Field, former Business Journal GM, and I have started Valley Business FRONT as a monthly slick magazine with a cutting-edge look and design and editorial content that will reflect the values of the business community in this region. We will be strong editorially and visually and we will not hesitate to take stands on issues (Tom from the right, me from the left). It will be a lively, informative and useful publication.

From Dan Smith to a list of which Handshake 2.0 was a member:

Tom Field and I would love to have you become a charter subscriber to an exciting new business magazine that will cover the Roanoke and New River Valley beginning Oct. 1 [2008] with its inaugural issue. Tom and I have formed the Valley Business FRONT magazine and we anticipate that our slick, slender, novel magazine format will be welcome to the business community for its sophistication, style and substance.

We fully expect to be the best business publication in Virginia from the very start and we want you to be identified with us. As a charter subscriber, you will be listed in the back of the magazine as one of our original supporters.

We are, of course, locally-owned and operated and we will be headquartered in downtown Roanoke by September. We are compiling stories and soliciting advertising now for our first issue and we’d love to hear any suggestions you have.

Our format will have nine basic industry segments represented in every issue (health and wellness, financial, legal, technology and industry, development, sports/recreation, culture, retail and education) in addition to stories from a broad range of other business stories that will include trends, people, economic indicators and even politics–if you can believe it.

Tom and I will go at it from the left and the right in our columns—keeping a balance without the snarky disrespect that is fashionable. We’re excited about it and hope you are too.

Attached is a subscription form that we’d love for you to send to the address on the form or to my home, which is serving as our international headquarters during August (1825 Belleville Rd. SW, Roanoke VA 24015). I hope to hear from you.

  1. Dan Smith says:

My son works for international transformer giant ABB as an engineer in South Boston (he has a three-year-old daughter); my daughter is a buyer for Textron in Georgia. My wife works in the public information office for the City of Roanoke and is a former editor of the Charlottesville Business Journal (where she worked when I met her).

I was named the 2005 Virginia Business Journalist of the Year and in 2008 was nominated to the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame (housed at VCU). I was recently nominated for the fourth time as Business Advocate of the Year by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce. (My wife calls me the Susan Lucci of the Advocate Award.) I am the founder of the Roanoke Regional Writers Conference at Hollins University, as well (it is scheduled Jan. 23-24 and has a 25-writer staff, teaching over two days–for $50).

  2. Thanks for leaving this update to your bio, Dan.

Again, best wishes to you and FRONT!
